Reputable addiction treatment centers are professionally run facilities, staffed by caring, experienced addiction specialists. The basics of such a facility – clean, well-equipped, comfortable – should be apparent from the moment a client walks in the door. And while these conditions are important, they are merely the beginning of what a good treatment center offers.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in the United States more than 14,500 specialized drug treatment facilities “provide counseling, behavioral therapy, medication, case management, and other types of services to persons with substance use disorders.”
That seems like a large number of drug rehab centers. However, according to a government study, more than 23 million people needed treatment for drug or alcohol abuse. That averages out to nearly 1600 people who need treatment for every single rehab center in the country.
Addiction to drugs or alcohol is a complex issue, and consequently treatment is complex. Addiction affects every part of a person’s life – their relationships, at work or at school, and in the community. Because of this complexity, and the huge impact addiction has on a person’s life, drug or alcohol rehabilitation is not one thing, but several things.
One component of treatment is the addiction itself. This process may involve detoxification, the medically-supervised reduction and elimination of drugs from the person’s body. Physical therapy, counseling, group therapy, and various other methods of rehabilitation and treatment are utilized to help beat the addiction.
As the addiction is lessened, a reputable alcohol rehab center will being to prepare the person for a transition back to their “normal” life – except as a sober person. This may involve job training, skill-building in handling various stressful situations, training in how to deal with confrontation, and other skills.
After the client leaves the facility, the program should offer some form of support to reinforce continued sobriety. This may consist of followup calls, arrangements for outside counseling, or any number of techniques to help ensure sobriety.
Now, given these steps in addiction treatment and rehabilitation, who offers all of this? Treatment is offered in a number of different settings. Help may be outpatient or inpatient. Some services may be offered in house while others are consigned to third parties.
What kind of drug rehab center should you choose? The answer is this: which one you choose is not as important as the fact that you choose one.
